Study Hours are an approximate figure and are dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.
The approximate amount of time required to complete the A' Level Pure Mathematics (Full AS/A2) course is: 2 Years
The A'Level Pure Mathematics (Full AS+A2) is divided into six units:
- Unit MCP1 Pure Core 1
- Unit MCP2 Pure Core 2
- Unit MFP1 Further Pure 1
- Unit MPC3 Pure Core 3
- Unit MPC4 Pure Core 4
- Unit MFP3 Further Pure 3
After a group of lessons you will find a tutor-marked assignment, and you will be told at which stage to work this. It should be attempted only when you are satisfied that you have completely studied and mastered the lessons to which it relates. It is best to attempt assignments under examination conditions, however it is not obligatory. Your answers to these assignments should be sent to your tutor for marking, and, when they are returned to you, suggested answers will be sent with them.
At this level of mathematics, there is rarely just one “right” method for solving a problem, however. The suggested answers will give one way, usually, but not always, the shortest. The method you have used may well be completely different.
Your tutor will indicate whether it is as good on your test-paper when it is returned. Experience shows that students who do submit assignments are much more successful than those who don’t. It is your primary means of gaining individualised help, of sorting out problems and maintaining motivation.
All units are broken down into clear subject topics, and students should spend the amount of time studying for each topic as advised by their course tutor. Each topic module has been written for ease of understanding and topic coverage may be of different length and difficulty depending on the level of detail and information required. You will need to study the modules in the sequence provided.
The AS and A2 modules link together and the final assessment is all done by examination as there is no coursework option. Exams are taken at an AQA centre and we can provide an extensive list of centres for you. Please read our FAQs for further information.
The Pure Mathematics Advanced Subsidiary (AS) award comprises three compulsory assessment units.
The Pure Mathematics A Level (AS and A2) award comprises five compulsory assessment units, and one optional unit chosen from three Further Pure assessment units.
For the written papers, each candidate will require a copy of the AQA Booklet of formulae and statistical tables issued for this specification.
