This distance learning A Level Sociology course has been designed to the latest specifications. The first available exam dates for this version of the AQA Sociology A Level are in June 2017.

Sociology is a great A Level subject because the knowledge and skills you can learn are often transferable to other areas of study. This course covers some really interesting topics, like crime, cultural identity and the media. But, more importantly, you will learn about the methods used to study these things, like qualitative and quantitative research, data collection and analysis, as well as more general aspects of academic practice. All of these skills are highly sought after in the jobs market, and will also serve you in good stead if you choose to proceed to higher education.

Course Objectives

This course has been designed to reflect the 'Integral Elements' and 'Core Themes' of the latest Sociology A Level specifications, as defined by AQA. These are as follows:

Integral Elements

All the following must be an integral part of the study of each topic area:

  • Sociological theories, perspectives and methods
  • The design of the research used to obtain data under consideration, including its strengths and limitations

Attention must be given to drawing out the links between topic areas studied

Core Themes

Students must study the following two core themes:

  • Socialisation, culture and identity
  • Social differentiation, power and stratification

The themes should be understood and applied to particular substantive areas of Sociology. These themes are to be interpreted broadly as threads running through many areas of social life and should not therefore be regarded as discrete topics.

In addition, students must understand the significance of conflict and consensus, social structure and social action, and the role of 'values'.

FAQ's

What is the difference between an A Level and any other course?

An A Level is a 2 year course that follows a specific syllabus provided by the corresponding examining body such as Edexcel, AQA and OCR. The A Level carries UCAS points depending on the grade achieved. The A Level is on Level 3 of the National Qualifications Network (NQF). A Levels are assessed by exams which have to be attended in person. A Level certificates are provided by the examining boards

What is the difference between the AS, A2 and full A Level?

The full A Level is divided into two halves. The first half is the AS and the second half is the A2. An AS or A2 course can be taken on their own and have a 1 year duration. The A2 can only be taken on successful completion of the AS.

Where do I sit my exams?

The A Level exams must be taken in a local college or examination centre near you. Please contact your local college to ask for a private or external candidate exam placement.

How do I find an examination centre?

You should call a local school/college to find out if you can be accepted as an external candidate. If you have any trouble finding an exam centre to register you as an external candidate, please see our examination centre webpage for guaranteed exam placements and links to the exam board websites. Please contact the exam centre for details on exam dates and fees.

How much do exams cost?

Exams are becoming increasingly expensive and unfortunately we have no control over what an exam centre charges you. The exam fee is not included in the price that you pay to eDistance Learning and we strongly advise that you do some shopping around. The cost of any exam consists of two parts; the exam board fee, which is fixed and is published on the relevant AQA or Edexcel website and the administration charge, which can be whatever the exam centre thinks is appropriate. Therefore the cost of an exam can vary from about £50 in a centre which feels it is offering a community service to £150 in a Private Tutorial College in central London.

Can I sit my A Level exam outside of the UK?

If you would like to take your exam outside of the UK you can check on the relevant examining body’s website for their international centres. Some subjects and examining boards only offer the exams in the UK so please ensure you check this before you book your course.

What is the duration of the course?

The AS and A2 courses last for 1 year from the date of enrolment. The full A Levels last 2 years from the date of enrolment. The courses can start at any time but please take into account the schedule of the exams which are in May and June.

How does distance learning work?

To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into sections. You work through each section at your own pace and time. Once completed, send the test paper back to your personal tutor for marking. You will then move onto the next section once successfully completing the previous section. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.

When can I start the course?

The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t require any previous experience or qualifications. All you need is a desire and motivation to succeed. You can even start right now - call and speak to one of our Professional Course Advisors.

How long do the courses take?

This is dependent upon your choice of course and how fast you want to learn. A full breakdown of the course is available in your course literature. We do provide estimated number of study hours; ask our course advisors for details.

I want to buy a course that is not on the course list. What do I do?

Our website has an excellent list of the most popular courses on the market. However, we do have access to a more in-depth portfolio should you not find the course you are looking for. You can call our course advisors and discuss the course you are interested in.

Do the courses have tutorial support?

Yes, You will be allocated an experienced tutor who will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have. Your tutors can be contacted via email and post. Please note that some of the courses do not have tutor support. Please check the course literature for details

Is the course work done online or sent via the internet?

Most of our courses are available in both Online & Paper formats. You can choose the way your want to study and submit your course work

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

We do like you to complete the course within the tutor support period but we can extend this for a small charge (currently £65). If you follow the recommended study hours, this will give you a good guide to complete the course withim the specified time period.

Will I have to sit an examination?

Most of our paper based courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.

How quickly will I receive my course material?

Once your payment has been received and cleared your enrolment should be processed within two days and your course materials delivered within 5 days, for customers who choose to pay in instalments this can take longer as we need a signed agreement back from you before we send the course materials.

I wish to cancel my course. How do I do this?

If you have decided that this is not the right type of course for you you may cancel your course, in writing, within the first seven days of having received it. You then need to return your materials to the address printed on the course pack. This is at your own expense and we would advise that you return the materials by a traceable service, as this is your responsibility until we receive the materials. Once we have received the materials, in good condition, we will organise a refund cheque to be sent to you. Please note that an admin fee will apply. If you required your materials to be delivered abroad, the additional postage charge will not be refunded.

Do I have to buy any other materials?

Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.
