The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards Quality Licence Scheme. This means that UK Learning has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet certain quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future.
The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.
The course itself has been designed to meet specific learners' and/or employers' requirements which cannot be satisfied through current regulated qualifications. ABC Awards endorsement involves robust and rigorous quality audits by external auditors to ensure quality is continually met. A review of courses is carried out as part of the endorsement process.
Possible Career Path
As a counsellor, you would give people time, attention and a safe, confidential environment to help them explore their feelings. People can seek counselling for many reasons, including relationship difficulties, bereavement, or wanting to improve the way they deal with everyday life. It would not be your job to advise your clients what to do, but instead you would encourage them to look at their options and find their own solutions for positive change. You would tend to use one particular theoretical approach to counselling, such as person-centred, humanistic or psychodynamic. You might work with clients with a wide range of issues, or specialise in an area such as eating disorders or addiction. Your work would involve: building a relationship of trust and respect with clients, agreeing on a 'counselling contract' to establish what will be covered in sessions, encouraging clients to talk about the feelings that have made them seek counselling, listening carefully, asking questions and clarifying your understanding of the client’s situation, empathising with the client’s issues, but challenging them when necessary, helping clients to see things more clearly or from different perspectives, referring clients to other sources of help if appropriate, attending regular sessions with your counselling supervisor and keeping confidential records. In most cases you would counsel clients face-to-face on a one-to-one basis, but you could also work with couples, families or groups, or counsel people over the phone or internet.
