The aims of this course are to allow students to develop:
- Complete the series of competence based workplace assessments which, together with Stage A of the programme, will provide students with the qualification NCFE Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young People’s Workforce (Early Learning & Child Care)
This Stage B course covers all of the competence elements of the current standards for employment in the child care sector. Stage A of the course can be studied by distance learning and do not require workplace assessment. Before becoming qualified to work in the sector, students will need to complete a competence based qualification which includes elements of assessment in the workplace. These additional assessments require completion of Stage B of the course for which a placement in a child care setting is required, together with a workplace supervisor who is willing and suitably qualified to oversee the assessment and evidencing of a range of practical tasks and activities.

Study Hours are an approximate figure and are dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. You should allow at least 1 - 2 hours of study to complete each question paper.

Each study unit contains a number of tasks which must be accomplished in a workplace environment and a portfolio of evidence of competence submitted for each of the required assessment criteria.
Upon verification of the activities, exercises and assignments, a certificate of achievement will be awarded by the national awarding organisation NCFE, as confirmation that your work has met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the programme.

NCFE Level 3 Diploma
Early Learning & Childcare
At the end of this course successful learners will be awarded a certificate of achievement by NCFE. This course has been accredited under NCFE IIQ Licence by Kendal Publishing Limited which has been approved as an NCFE Investing in Quality (IIQ) centre to give formal recognition to our courses. We have designed our training courses specifically to meet the needs of learners who prefer to study from home. The course measurable learning outcomes have been benchmarked at Level 3 (using Ofqual’s Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF) level descriptors) to allow you to consider the depth of study, difficulty, and level of achievement involved.
In Scotland this course leads to a Level 6 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 6 on the Qualifications Framework for Scotland.
In Ireland this course leads to a Level 5 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 5 on the Qualifications Framework for Ireland.
This second stage of study requires students to gather evidence of practical skills, gained in a workplace setting. These additional assessments will require documented evidence in the form of (for example) observations, witness statements, professional discussions and direct observation of tasks conducted by a qualified person. This second stage must be arranged by the student once the Stage A assessments have been completed.
Students registering for Stage B will receive a study pack detailing all of the assessment criteria required for award of the qualification plus additional study notes to those issued for Stage A. The list of assessment criteria will be marked to show those already covered in Stage and those for which evidence of learning is required during stage B. Students must then compile, and submit for assessment, a portfolio for each unit listed below which provides evidence of learning for the Stage B assessment criteria. These portfolios must include evidence of practical skills demonstrated in a workplace setting, under supervision of a qualified person. (The qualified person will normally be a child care setting manager or supervisor qualified at level 4 or above).
At the end of this course (Stages A & B) successful learners will receive an NCFE Level 3 Diploma for Children and Young People’s Workforce (Early Learning & Child Care). QCF qual no 500/8979/1/ELC

Possible Career Path
Childminders work in their own homes, looking after children whose parents are at work or studying. This could be throughout the day with babies and children under five, or after school and in the school holidays with older children. As a childminder you would: make sure that the children in your care feel secure and are safe, warm and well-fed plan, prepare and serve meals change nappies and make up bottles for babies help children to develop by providing a range of play activities, both indoors and outside take children on outings, for example to the park or to toddler groups take older children to and from playgroup or school. You would need to respect parents' wishes about their children's diet, routines and religion, and share information about the children with their parents.
