    The HNC in Travel and Tourism provides a nationally recognised qualification which is understood and respected by employers in the sector. The course provides a solid foundation in the travel industry and prepares students for a wide range of work roles. The qualification contains units which will underpin the knowledge required to gain employment in the travel and tourism industry, as well as allowing progression to further academic and professional qualifications.

Study Time

Study Hours are an approximate figure and are dependant upon how much time you can dedicate to your studies and how well you grasp the learning concepts in the course material. Furthermore, at the end of each lesson there is a question paper that needs to be completed and returned to your tutor. Assessment is on an ongoing Unit-by-Unit basis. Each individual Unit specification provides detailed information on the Evidence Requirements and guidance on approaches to assessment.

Candidates will also be assessed via a Graded Unit towards the end of the programme. The purpose of Graded Units is to grade the candidate’s ability to integrate the knowledge and skills gained in the mandatory Units.

  • Appropriate grouping of National Units.

  • An SVQ at level 2 or 3 in a relevant area.
  • Different combinations of relevant National Qualifications, Vocational Qualifications and equivalent qualifications from other awarding bodies may also be acceptable.

For candidates where English is not their first language, it is recommended that they possess English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at SCQF level 5 or an overall score of 5.5 in IELTS

Tour Manager
As a tour manager, or tour director, you would be responsible for making sure that travel arrangements for groups of holiday-makers run as smoothly and enjoyably as possible. You would accompany passengers throughout their tour, keeping them informed about details like arrival and departure times and places of interest. You would usually work on coach tours that could last from two to three days to over a month. You might also work on tours by rail or cruise ship. Your job would involve: welcoming the tour group at the start of their trip and informing them of travel arrangements and stopover points, making sure all travel arrangements run according to plan, and that the accommodation, meals and service are satisfactory, helping with passport and immigration issues, giving spoken commentaries about places en route (local guides may also be used), promoting and selling excursions to tour members, advising on sights, local restaurants and shops at each destination and recording issues that may require follow-up after the tour. You would need to be available at almost any time to give advice, solve problems and deal with emergencies like loss of passports or money, illness or difficulties with accommodation. You might also specialise in the business travel sector. This would involve managing the travel arrangements for people on business, which could include dealing with insurance, visas, vehicle hire and responding to itinerary changes.

To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into sections. You work through each section at your own pace and time. Once completed, send the test paper back to your personal tutor for marking. You will then move onto the next section once successfully completing the previous section. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.

When can I start the course?

The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t require any previous experience or qualifications. How long do the courses take?

Is there a time limit or any deadlines?

We do like you to complete the course within the tutor support period but we can extend this for a small charge (currently £65). If you follow the recommended study hours, this will give you a good guide to complete the course withim the specified time period.

I wish to cancel my course. How do I do this?

If you have decided that this is not the right type of course for you you may cancel your course, in writing, within the first seven days of having received it. You then need to return your materials to the address printed on the course pack. This is at your own expense and we would advise that you return the materials by a traceable service, as this is your responsibility until we receive the materials. Once we have received the materials, in good condition, we will organise a refund cheque to be sent to you. Please note that an admin fee will apply. If you required your materials to be delivered abroad, the additional postage charge will not be refunded.

Do I have to buy any other materials?

Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.

How is the course structured?

The qualification contains units which will underpin the knowledge required to gain employment in the travel and tourism industry, as well as allowing progression to further academic and professional qualifications. Each module contains either one or two SQA units.

Module 1

The Structure of the Travel and Tourism Industry (1 credit)
This unit provides the candidate with an understanding of the different sectors involved in the travel and tourism industry. It focuses on the range of producers in the travel and tourism industry and shows their interaction with wholesalers and retailers. This includes an overview of visitor attractions; an insight into the planning process for tourism developments will also be gained.

Applying Marketing Principles in Travel and Tourism (1 credit)
This unit is designed to provide the candidate with an introduction to the principles of marketing as a management discipline, and to their application within the context of the travel and tourism industry. It focuses strongly on the way in which the particular nature of the tourism product impacts on the marketing activities of travel and tourism businesses. Candidates will investigate the dynamic nature of the travel and tourism industry and consider methods that can be used to understand and identify existing and potential customers. This will include a study of consumer motivation and market segmentation as well as identification of the factors which influence demand for the travel and tourism product.

Module 2

International Tourist Destinations (1 credit)
This is a practical unit which involves the candidate in acquiring and applying knowledge about the principal worldwide tourist destinations and attractions. A good working knowledge of tourist destinations is a necessity for candidates seeking employment in all areas of the travel industry. The scope of the unit is broad with the candidate developing a working knowledge of a range of tourist destinations around the world. Key aspects of tourist destinations are studied including physical features and attractions. Students will develop their knowledge and skills in researching worldwide tourist destinations through reference materials such as atlases, brochures, tourist guides and the internet. Students who successfully complete the unit will be able to provide resort and destination information to customers of airlines, travel agencies or tour operators in a professional manner.

Creating a Culture of Customer Care (1 credit)
The purpose of this unit is to enable candidates to recognise and evaluate effective customer care within a relevant work environment. It allows candidates to analyse factors affecting customer care and to judge the effectiveness of a customer care strategy by applying them to the workplace. The unit emphasises that customer care is a key area of importance and value to organisations and is, therefore, critical to the work of any employee.

Module 3

I.T. Applications Software 1 (1 credit)
This unit is designed to enable students to use Information Technology (IT) systems and applications independently to support a range of information processing activities. The unit is designed to develop a broad knowledge of the theoretical concepts, principles, boundaries and scope of IT applications. These activities will be centred on using software applications packages to meet complex information requirements while paying attention to security and the needs of other users.

Analysing and Presenting Complex Communication (1 credit)
This unit is about responding to and presenting complex business communication. In this unit, you will prepare for and take part in a formal meeting before reflecting on this experience. You will study a piece of complex business information in-depth as well as writing a business report on a topical business issue.

Module 4

Tour Operations (2 credits)
This unit is designed to enable candidates to develop an in-depth knowledge of the tour operations sector of the travel and tourism industry and to demonstrate competence in applying techniques used by tour operators launching a new tour operating programme. It will look at tour operations in relation to both inbound and outbound sectors.

Module 5

Planning and Sustainable Development in Tourism (2 credits)
This unit is designed to enable candidates to understand the concept of planning and sustainable development in tourism. It examines sources of funding for tourism development in the UK, as well as taking account of the need to adopt policies, strategies and practices within planning, that take account of the sustainable use of natural and built resources, and the economic as well as the socio-cultural well-being of the local community.

Module 6

Preparation for Employment in Travel and Tourism (1 credit)
The aim of this unit is to enable candidates to develop their awareness and understanding of the purpose and structure of the selection interview process as carried out by sectors of the travel and tourism industry. An experiential approach will be applied throughout: enabling candidates to prepare for and handle complex interview situations effectively. There will be particular emphasis on the development of personal and interpersonal skills which are essential to many customer contact situations in travel and tourism.

Travel and Tourism Graded Unit 1 (1 credit)
This Graded unit is designed to provide evidence that the candidate has achieved the principal aims of the HNC Travel and Tourism. It is a unit designed to bring together all of the knowledge and skills which have been acquired during the course as a whole.
